He announced the sale of a U.S. generics drugs business last month to India’s Aurobindo (ARBN.NS) and a consumer healthcare joint venture to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L) earlier this year.
Meanwhile, he spent $8.7 billion to take over U.S.-based Avexis to get its experimental gene therapy against potentially deadly spinal muscular atrophy that is nearing a filing for U.S. approval.

Wer keine Top-Ausbildung mit Hochschulabschluss hat, findet bei Novartis also keine neue Arbeitsmöglichkeiten mehr.
Das ist übertrieben formuliert. Wir werden in der Schweiz auch nach diesem Schritt noch mehr als 10000 Menschen beschäftigen, mit ganz unterschiedlichen Profilen. Aber es stimmt, dass es für sogenannte «blue collar»-Jobs (Arbeiter-Jobs, Anm. d. Red.) schwieriger wird. Doch wir wollen unseren Beitrag zur Weiterbildung und Umschulung leisten.
Für die Schweiz ist es dennoch ein schlechtes Signal: Einfache indus­trielle Jobs verschwinden.
Diese Entwicklung hat in diesem Land vor längerer Zeit eingesetzt. Und es ist gut gelungen, diesen Wandel zu bewältigen. Die Logik ist nun mal so, dass in einem Hochlohnland primär hochwertige Arbeitsplätze angeboten werden. Auch bei Novartis.
