His cronies follow his orders as long as they believe that he is stronger than them. The moment he pulls out of Ukraine, he shows weakness. Then he shows that all his military might counts for nothing, as a comedian from that state of farmers to the south bested him. Then they will doubt his strength, and suddenly, there will be a tragic escalator accident and Russia gets a new president. Putin knows this. So he cannot pull out, even if it means pulling Russia down into the abyss with him.
