Sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) in China, the world’s biggest auto market, will jump to 20% of overall new car sales by 2025 from just 5% now, and to 50% by 2035, the China Society of Automotive Engineers (China-SAE) said on Tuesday.
The association also predicts 95% of NEV sales in 2035 will be battery electric vehicles, while hybrid vehicles will make up the rest, China-SAE president Li Jun, told its annual conference in Shanghai.
Li’s presentation slide showed that China-SAE had slightly lowered its outlook for NEVs for 2025 to 20%, from a 25% goal mentioned in a policy proposal published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology last year.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in a market “road map” that China’s urbanization drive and the overseas expansion of its automakers would help drive annual vehicle sales up around 25 percent from last year’s total.
Automakers in China, the world’s largest automobile market with sales of 28 million vehicles in 2016, are increasingly pushing into electric and hybrid vehicles to meet stringent new government quotas.
Sales of new energy vehicles should reach 2 million by 2020 and account for more than 20 percent of total vehicle production and sales by 2025, the ministry said. That implied annual NEV sales of over 7 million within the next decade.

NEVs include battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. The industry expects China to sell around 1.1 million NEVs this year.

The proposal, which has been hotly debated in recent months, has not been fully detailed, but it would add a levy to vehicles weighing 1,800 kg (3,970 pounds) or more. It would most likely exempt electrified vehicles, including battery electrics and plug-in hybrids.
“The tax on weight is completely unnecessary,” Senard told the news service Agence France-Presse on Sunday. “Buyers want larger vehicles, and the customer is king. I don’t see why we should make customers feel guilty.”
Environmental groups had pushed the tax as a protest against surging SUV sales. The main proponent, the Citizens’ Climate Convention, called for the tax to start at 1,400 kg, with a penalty of 10 euros per kg over that figure.
