Looking admiringly at the large photograph of Benito Mussolini in his cafe in Rome, Marco Moretti shook his head. “This is history, not fascist propaganda,” he said. “You cannot pass a law that attacks history.”
Like many Italians, he is angry after the lower house of parliament passed a bill making it an offence to use images from Italy’s fascist past for propaganda.
The bill targets resurgent passion for Benito Mussolini, the dictator who crushed democracy, passed racial laws and allied with Hitler before he was killed by partisans in 1945.
...
He admitted it would be difficult to decide whether a sugar sachet or a bib warranted a jail sentence. “If you buy a bottle of wine with Mussolini on the label, take it home and drink it, that’s OK, but if the shop has a sign saying ‘Viva Mussolini’, that’s not,” he said.
Many Italians overlook Mussolini’s racial laws and jailing of opponents. Mr Moretti said: “We remember the good he did, from building council houses and hospitals to draining the malarial swamps at Latina, south of Rome.”
