Anupam Chander, a legal scholar at the University of California at Davis, argues that the mixed messages Tesla has been sending about Autopilot are "unbelievably irresponsible."
Tesla's story, of course, is that this headline and this video are referring to a future version of Autopilot that hasn't been released yet. But it's not hard to imagine how a customer might be confused. A customer might assume that "Full Self-Driving Hardware on All Cars" means that all Tesla cars have full self-driving capabilities. The distinction between hardware and software isn't obvious—especially since people aren't used to thinking about cars as computing platforms.
