The world’s biggest hedge fund has secured $22m of financial assistance from the government of Connecticut, in the latest sign of stretched US states vying to retain their wealthiest taxpayers and prevent jobs moving elsewhere.
Bridgewater had told the state it was evaluating a move to neighbouring New York, spurring Governor Dan Malloy to offer the package of economic incentives to entice it to stay. The state had calculated that it could lose as much as $4.87bn over 10 years if Bridgewater and all its employees left, Catherine Smith, commissioner of its Department of Economic and Community Development, told the FT.
