Tesla contractor launches probe into pay, conditions for foreign workers
A Tesla contractor said Wednesday it may terminate its relationship with a Slovenian company that records show paid as little as $5 an hour to workers expanding the electric car company's Fremont plant.
The statement came after Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet that his company paid $55 an hour for the work.
Eisenmann, a German manufacturer of industrial systems hired by Tesla, announced it would investigate allegations that its subcontractor ISM Vuzem paid a work force of about 140 Eastern European men substandard wages. It added that its contract with Vuzem explicitly stated a $55 hourly labor rate.
"Tesla actually paid $55/hr," tweeted Musk, who also said "less and less" of the story appeared "to be true." Tesla has not provided additional documentation of the pay rate.

Lesnik’s contract, pay schedule and time cards were provided to the court by Vuzem, a subcontractor based in Slovenia. A workman’s compensation record states Lesnik’s monthly salary was 800 euros, or roughly $900, based on a 40-hour workweek. That translates to an hourly rate of about $5.60. The suit says Lesnik was promised additional pay when his work at the factory ended, but he never received the pay.
Time sheets provided by Vuzem to the court show Lesnik regularly worked more than 40 hours a week. In his first eight days, he worked 80 hours, according to records. Lesnik’s time sheet showed he worked 263 hours in April 2015. He worked 140 hours in May, until he fell three stories through the roof and was seriously injured on May 16. The lawsuit says he and other workers were not paid overtime.
Musk tweeted he had doubts about the story, but added that “we still need to make sure that the injured person is taken care of.”

Če se bo izkazalo, da se je razlika med 5 in 55 dolarji izgubila izključno na relaciji slovenska firma - slovenski delavec, bo to ena res lepa mednarodna promocija Slovenije! Spirits up!
